Kia ora Mosen at Largers. Here’s what’s coming up in our next two-hour show that’s got the blind community talking.
Some conversations are difficult to have without them getting emotive and people feeling attacked. One of those is the subject of blind people and literacy. Like many Braille advocates, I maintain that if you are listening to an audiobook, having someone read a book to you, or you have a machine read a book to you, you are not actually reading it yourself. You are not decoding symbols to form words. In that regard, if you can’t read print, Braille is the only key to true literacy blind people have. That’s not to say that blind people who don’t read Braille can’t be incredibly intelligent and make meaningful contributions to the world. Many do every day. But for me, the facts are clear even though the truth of the matter may upset some, and it is important to state those facts so young blind people are given access to Braille instruction that will set them up for many aspects of life. Obviously, not everyone agrees with me, and we’ll debate the matter again this week.
Bonnie and I will be heading off on our European trip soon. Listeners have been kind enough to share a range of travel tips, both in general and about some of the places we intend to visit. We’ll share those with you this week.
Gary O’Donoghue is here to demonstrate a nifty wee gadget if you want to do top-quality recording on the go. The Zoom F3 records in 32-bit float, it’s tiny, and it’s a recording powerhouse with an iOS and Android app to control it.
There’s plenty more on the show as well. If you want to raise something new, you’re very welcome. Please don’t be shy, I’d love to hear from you. What makes Mosen At Large special is the global community we’ve built and all the perspectives we share with each other.
